Alex’s Journey to Meaningful Employment

25 year old Alex has been a VisAbility client for 5 years, first approaching VisAbility for support with Occupational Therapy and Orientation & Mobility Training. When he found himself out of work, our Client Engagement Team member Lisa suggested Alex contact our Disability Employment Service team, VisAbility COACT.

At VisAbility COACT, we love seeing people find meaningful work that boosts their confidence and independence. One such success story is Alex. Alex is the kind of person who lights up a room. He’s outgoing, loves to chat, and genuinely cares about those around him. But his journey to employment wasn’t always easy. Alex has overcome multiple challenges, including vision impairment, and approaches each new challenge head-on. Now Alex has pushed through barriers and found a role that suits his strengths perfectly as a Minor Works Assistant.

“The new job is more hands-on with a lot of interaction with other people. I’m enjoying working in a team where everyone gets along – it’s just a great work environment,” said Alex.

How VisAbility COACT Helped

Our team at VisAbility COACT worked closely with Alex to make his job search as smooth as possible. We provided:

  • Job matching to ensure his role fit his skills and personality.
  • Resume assistance to highlight his experience.
  • Work placement negotiation to create an inclusive environment.
  • Interview coaching to help him stand out during the hiring process.
  • Ongoing support to ensure he settled in well.
  • Employer liaison to maintain a great workplace relationship.
  • Transportation assistance to help him travel independently.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Since starting his new role, Alex has grown in confidence. He feels like part of a team, which has improved his social and professional development.

His manager, Paul, has seen the transformation firsthand:

“Alex has fit in extremely well and made a great impression in a short space of time. His work output is excellent, and he adds a lot of value to the team. It’s been a pleasure to see his confidence grow, and he’s already making a real impact. We’ve even extended his hours as the work he does is a great help to us, and on a personal level, he’s a fantastic fit. He gets along with everyone, and his positive attitude contributes to a great team environment.”

Alex’s Big Career Wins

Alex has achieved some major milestones since starting his job:

  1. Increased work hours—proof of his dedication and value.
  2. Acing his job interview—a big step in his professional journey.
  3. Independent travel to work—a huge leap towards self-sufficiency.

Alex said of the experience, “VisAbility and COACT changed my life and I’m grateful for them. I finally enjoy my work – it’s given me a sense of purpose.”

Looking Ahead

Not only has Alex found meaningful employment through VisAbility, but he’s also found Ballroom Dancing! After reading the monthly eViews in 2023, Alex discovered that Ballroom Fit hosts weekly dancing classes inside Handa Hall. Darryl and the team made him feel welcome and he quickly fell in love with the sport, competing in his first competition last year! Alongside work, Alex is now preparing for and April competition in Perth at the Pan Pacific Hotel. He’s grateful to Darryl and dance partner Kaley, who supported and pushed him to become the dancer he is today.

Alex’s story shows what is possible when people are given the right opportunities and support.
