Meet like-minded people with low and no vision, in our Community Activity Centre. Make new friends, explore new interests and learn new skills as you take part in a variety of interesting daily activities.

Express yourself and get involved with your local community through creative and sensory activities in our comprehensive leisure program.

The activities are modified to make them bigger, bolder and brighter. You will be supported to use specialised equipment, assistive technology, processes and your other senses to compensate for your vision impairment.

Choose from a regular schedule of group activities including:

Arts and crafts

A fun, social atmosphere in which participants develop or continue to engage their creative skills, producing knit, crochet, or other yarn items. Expert advice on hand for ideas, and to catch dropped stitches. Other crafty projects welcome!

Art studio: Painting

Come along and discover the joy of studio painting in an encouraging and stimulating setting. Beginners are welcomed as well as artists with any level of experience. Learn how to develop and maintain your painting skills in various mediums, from the initial design development stages to that final varnish and display.

Cooking and culture

Delve into authentic Asian cultures and cuisines! A social group where you get hands-on practice making delicious savoury and sweet dishes (and sometimes drinks), for lunch or to take home!

Gardening (seasonal)

Planting and maintaining the vegetable patch in our raised garden beds, you will be able to take home herbs and vegetables when ready, or use them in the Cooking and Culture group! Also, have a go at propagating and potting plants.

Practice Italian

In a friendly and fun setting you will explore Italian language, customs and songs! Preferable if you have some basic familiarity with Italian already.

Japanese language and culture

Join Atsuko on Tuesday mornings to be transported to the world of kimonos, onsen, tori gates, matcha tea ceremonies and more!

Mahjong

Try your hand at Western mah-jong, a strategic tile-based game. We have extra large mah-jong tiles, adaptive equipment, and welcome people of all skill levels. Games are social and chatting is encouraged. (If you’ve played before, be prepared for a slower pace!)

Men’s interest

Discussion of current affairs, points of interest, jokes, some quizzes and occasionally we host guest speakers or have a barbecue. Weekly excursions to local cafes and interesting places.

Mighty Minds

In this group, minds matter! Join us for an afternoon of team-building with fun & challenging puzzles and brainteasers that expand lateral thinking, logic & reasoning skills to support healthy brains. Most popular are crosswords and trivia.

Mixed Social Program

Choose between 3 different activities which will run at the same time: indoor carpet bowls, trivia & games, as well as card-making. You could start off playing carpet bowls then later choose to have a coffee and join the trivia group. If that doesn’t suit, you could try your hand at card making, all in the one afternoon!

Mosaics

A very tactile way to unleash your creativity! Popular creations include house numbers, trivets, table tops, and artistic wall-hangings. A very fun activity, and very satisfying when you get to see and take home the completed project!

Music therapy and appreciation

A mixed roster of volunteer musicians perform every week (and a music therapist once a month). This group entails sitting down, appreciating and discussing various types of music, composers, groups, singers, etc.

Pottery

One of the most tactile forms of art, pottery is ideal for participants who are blind or vision impaired. Popular project choices include plant pots, statues and bowls. Bring your own ideas, or come up with them as you go along! All creations are glazed and fired in our on-site kiln for a professional finish to take home.

For more of a challenge than hand-building pottery, sit at a wheel to create one-of-a kind pieces such as mugs, vases and bowls.

Talking Book Club

Book-lovers unite! (No homework required). Each week, Amy will read a short story or book excerpt, out loud to the group. Discussion is very welcome, and so are your requests! Join in person, over the phone, or online.

Woodwork

Join us in the woodshed to (safely) use hand and power tools to build your own custom pieces such as bread boards and portable picnic tables. Make something beautiful from scratch! A very practical and addictive activity!

Zumgo dance fitness

Have fun and get moving to Latin-American music! Handa Hall is a venue very large venue, so there’s no danger of bumping into others. No vision, fitness level or dance skills necessary!
