Workshop outline
This course will give you an overview of common vision impairments and practical strategies you can implement when working with a client with a vision impairment within a Residential Care Facility or Supported Living Environments. You will learn about a range of practical strategies, aids and assistive technologies available through VisAbility shop to assist the individual to maintain their independence in their everyday activities.
This course includes a practical component where our qualified specialist staff will train you on how to safely guide a person with a vision impairment.
What is covered?
- Understanding of low vision, legal blindness and total blindness.
- Understanding common eye conditions causing vision loss, and experience what it is like to have these vision impairments.
- Implementation of practical strategies to support an individual with a vision impairment.
- Demonstration of a range of aids and technology to help individuals maintain their independence around the Residential Care Facility or Supported Living Environments
- Practically learn how to safely guide a person with a vision impairment with Human Guide Training.
- Understanding of a range of services available at VisAbility.
Who is this course for?
- Allied Health professionals and Care staff in residential care facilities.
- Allied Health Professionals and Care staff in Supported Living Environments. (e.g. group homes)
Facilitator details
This course will be facilitated by one of our Occupational Therapists and/or Orientation and Mobility Specialists.
Skill level
This workshop is suitable for everyone working with people with vision impairment in supported living environments such as hostels and nursing homes.
Workshop details
This workshop can be conducted at your designated location (onsite), VisAbility (Victoria Park) or remotely via video conference. Note that to get the most benefit from the workshop we recommend the workshop be conducted in person.

This workshop runs for 1.5 – 2 hours.

Requirements
Onsite
- Room set up in classroom format.
- Data projector and screen, HDMI or USB C connection.
- Access to an indoor corridor with hinged or sliding doors.
- Access to a flight of stairs with handrails.
- Access to an open plan indoor and/or outdoor area.
- Display table 1000mm by 600mm.
- Chair with arms.
Remote
- Access to Microsoft Teams.
